Marina, in the midst of winding down their Spring practices, had the great honor of having Coach Gary Smith drop in on their practice Wednesday, June 6th. The focus of this "mini-clinic" was the press and Coach Smith helped the Marina make some tweaks and adjustments to the kind of pressure Marina plans to put on its opponents this season.
Coach Smith has this infectious energy and passion for coaching that is immediately present. He made a real connection with the Marina kids and the hour and 20 minutes Coach Smith worked with the boy's couldn't have been more productive. If you haven't watched Coach Smith in action and you are committed to extreme fast break basketball, it is a MUST to see him speak, coach and/or just get a chance to exchange emails with him. He has so much too offer and his success certainly speaks for itself. There is probably not a more innovative coach in the country in terms of having been able to succeed in both a slow-down defensive style of play and a extreme fast break style.
We can't thank Coach Smith enough for the time has given to our program and we certainly hope to continue that relationship. We'd also like to wish Coach Smith all the best in his travels to Grinnell College this year. It is a scary thought to think Coach Arseneault and Coach Smith will be sharing the same bench...I'm guessing there will be a lot of D-III coaches in the Midwest losing sleep over that prospect.

The news of Coach Smith headed to Grinnell is not commonly known yet. It will set up a very powerful opportunity for Grinnell to add some new ideas and tweaks thus making life very difficult for their league.
Grinnell won the regular season title last season only to lose in the league tournamant (which is what gets the NCAA bid).
Ironically, Coach A and Coach Smith previously set up a game so Grinnell is headed to play at Redlands in early January this season!!! I already want a film of that one!
So Tom - what areas did you tweak from what you did last year?
In terms of *tweaks* in our press, we are just exploring them at this point. We have yet to try them out in live action. Coach Smith just gave us some different looks that he uses in order to create a little more variety in the press.
The first thing we worked on in our "mini-clinic" was having our guy on the ball not trap right away on the first pass. We would have him *Stay*(which is the name of the press) and the up man on the strong side would play his man inside-out, trying to force him to the short-corner. We want to force the catch to the short corner where we would then like to direct the ball up the sideline at as fast a pace as possible with the defender on the ball riding the dribblers inside shoulder(keeping him on the sideline). We then would like the on the ball defender to race up the floor and trap the dribbler from behind. While this is all happening, the other defenders in the press would *Stay* with their men. Once the trap is consummated, we would gap and hit passing lanes like we would in our regular press.
The other look we are exploring is taking the defender off the ball and move him to an up position and move one of our up guys into the 2nd line, giving us two interceptors. We really want to sell out on denial with the up guys to force the over the top pass, which hopefully will be swallowed up by our 2 interceptors...and even in the passes aren't stolen, we will be forcing pace as the ball will be advancing up the floor. After the first pass, we are then into our regular mode of all-out pressure and trapping.
It should be noted, especially for you *newbies*...even though we are looking at some different press looks..we are still staying true to our fundamental defensive philosophy...ALL-OUT PRESSURE, every second we are in any of our presses. Don't sacrifice that level of intensity in order to have variety...if we are unable to show over the course of the summer that these press adjustments are causing us to play "less hard", it may not be in our best interests to use those presses during the season.

Thanks for the recap. As one of the "newbies" that you mention, I suspect that we may be more effective initially by relying on the "basic" system schemes. I understand this to be a super agressive 1-2-1-1 zone press which continues to pursue trapping opportunities in the front court. In addition, full court pressure and trapping is executed on missed shots, with the nearest two defenders to the ball trapping, while the others assume intercept positions. Could you assess my level of understanding, and make corrections as necessary? Thanks.

I think you got it. We played out of the 1-2-1-1 95% of the time last year...with a little bit of a 1-2-1-1 extended half court-trap and on a very RARE occasion, we made a slight press adjustment out of a time-out if we saw something we could exploit(but it was typically a one time deal).
You just want to try and maximize effort...a VAST MAJORITY of the TO's you force will be a result of effort....the 1-2-1-1 scheme won't be the reason you force TO's. The 1-2-1-1 does help to put you in a good position to apply pressure...but the application of the pressure is the most crucial.
You will undoubtedly struggle with defending the lag passes...that is just something your kids will have to adjust to over time...but don't spend too much time addressing it now...just make sure your players are ending each shift completely exhausted...if you can get that, good things are likely to happen.
I'm curious as to whether these tweaks are just for variety, or are they a counter to something the offense is doing to hurt you, especially the "Stay" press. I can see this if they are burning you with a quick return pass to the inbounder. What other situations would this likely be used?

The tweaks we are going to employ will probably work both as a different look and as a counter to what the opposing team is doing in their press-breaker.
Also, it may turn out that one of our groups plays better in "Stay" or "Off"(or some other variation) so that may end up being that particular groups default press.
Really, for us, it boils down to flexibility. Our kids understand that maximum effort is the number one necessity of our press...now we can play with the formations of the press which can help us in a variety of ways...it can simply give the opponent a different look, help us take advantage of a certain scheme our opponent is using to break the press or it could play to the strengths of a particular group we have on the floor.
To answer your last question...*Stay* will be used to counter the quick pass back to the inbounder...but it can also be used simply to keep the opponent off balance. Since *Stay* and our regular press are exactly the same in terms of initial formation, the opponent will have no way of knowing when we are going to leave the inbounder to trap or not...which may discourage them from even looking back to make that pass.
Like I said...it should add a bit of confusion and force your opponent to be more uncertain of what it is we are actually doing in our press.
